If I Had The World To Give • Hunter / Garcia
I'd give it to you, long as you live
Would you let it fall
Or hold it all in your arms?
If I had a song to sing
I'd sing it to you, long as you live
Lullaby
Or maybe a plain serenade
Wouldn't you laugh, dance and cry or be afraid
At the change you made?
I may not have the world to give to you
But maybe I have a tune or two
Only if you let me be your world
Could I ever give this world to you
Could I ever give this world to you
But I will give what love I have to give
I will give what love I have to give
I will give what love I have to give
Long as I live
If I had a star to give
I'd give it to you, long as you live
Would you have the time
To watch it shine, watch it shine?
Or ask for the moon and heaven too?
I'd give it to you
Maybe I've got no star to spare
Or anything fine or even rare
Only if you let me be your world
Would I ever give this world to you
Would I ever give this world to you
One more Saturday night
My heart is like my car. Beat up and held together with duct tape, but gets me everywhere I need to go at 80 miles an hour. Life ain't pretty, but if you can find your purpose and make it work, well then . . . you're ahead of the game.
My purpose has always been the same, "To make the world a better place, one smile at a time"; Increasingly difficult in an age where people are beat down, jaded, done and seen it all. . . what the fuck happened to people where their attention span disappeared. This downfall of human interest has occurred in my life span.
I just keep on doing what I do. Card tricks, coin tricks, cups and balls and the linking rings. I sell trick decks and share the love in my heart.
Polly is my girl, we're good together. Twice divorced, 4 kids that don't talk to me; I got a lot a love to give. Polly gets most of it. Life can be so cruel and so beautiful, simultaneously. . . . . like laughing and crying at the same time.
Death lurks around the corner, unless you're me. . . . and as you all know. . . I am immortal.
You can't kill me
4 years now in LA
what can I say
Am I closer. . . or farther away
whose to say
just pray
stay. . . just a little bit longer
one of these days. . . . .

Nikki • RIP (this shit SUCKS!)
not for me to say but is
Phone call on a Sunday morning
out of the Norm.
Nikki, what the fuck happened!
this wasn't supposed to go down this way!
We talked two days ago for a half an hour or more
what would Gramsie think as you floated out the door!?
Conflicted emotions, I'm all broken up
I don't know what to say. . WTF!!
Life is so full of uncertain twists and turns
a young mother marries and a child is born
But the mother barley gets her foot out the door
before her life vanishes and she is no more
Nikki, why did you go?
Why did you leave us?
was it your disappointment
or a grievance?
Life is a strange game where the stakes are high
and so am I
so why
why. . . do the innocent die so young
why. . do we go on. . .
why is life so cruel
Broken up and sad
we weren't that close
you were family
that mattered the most.

I'm surprised I make a living
I go out every night, and I come home with money. I do magic tricks and entertain people. I live on my own terms and answer to nobody. It's just me and them, no agents, no bookers, no bureaucracy. They either like it or not. They pay or they don't. I try and feel a groove. Let me create an illusion. . . . let me sell a deck. Let me make the world a better place one smile at a time.

Off the web • What people are saying
Last night I went to see Tom Frank perform at the WC Fields bar at the Magic Castle. Tom is a friend of mine so I am a bit biased but that being said here goes my take on what happened. Someone brought him a riser to stand on and it was placed before the stained glass window that shares a wall with the Library. Tom, a street performer, did a great set of magic and kept the crows entertained and buying drinks. When the Peller opened Tom stepped down from the riser and went over to the bar and performed at the bar itself. He was a working magic machine who understood the room and bar and used both at the appropriate time. He entertained and sold drinks.
But no this wasn't all that happened. The Piano Player was playing soft Jazz. Tom heard it and began to do his magic to the Jazz. The Piano player saw this magician using her music and timed the Jazz to coincide with his act. I don't know how to describe it except to say it was like a piano player at a silent movie providing back ground that was appropriate to what was going on in front of her. The two performed as one Magic hand in hand with Music.
I spoke with Tom afterwards and he told me it was his street performance skills that prompted him to use the music as his background and he went over and tipped the Piano Player. All in all the evening was a thing of beauty.
Tonight is his last night at the WC Fields bar. Please do yourself a favor and get down there to see how it can work.
Sometimes I go to watch friends perform, as an obligation or a way of showing respect. Last night was an experience I'm glad I got to see and enjoy in person. Do yourselves a favor, go see him and then let me know what you think.
And for those of you who are interested in a man who can draw a crowd, hold a crowd and perform some great magic, he has a lecture that he can do and has done for magic clubs in the past. So who ever has some sway in bookings for lectures it might be a great idea to get him to lecture to our magician members.
Have a great weekend and do come to see Tom Frank and the other magicians at our Club.

More than one of my magic co-horts had told me to keep an eye open for Tom Frank, knowing that I had spent my formative years performing street shows. So, I just sort of hovered around the Inner Circle for a while, waiting for the right moment to introduce myself. As I had been enlightened as to his years of experience on the pavement, I was not surprised to see how Tom flowed easily from bar to platform - from patter to music, from small crowd of peers to larger crowd of civilians. When I got to talking with him during a little lull, and happened to ask when he might next perform, he said, "For you, Phil, how about right this minute?" Well, there were three other magicians with me at the time. We got to see a 'private' show (?) on the dance floor that involved Sonyee improvising on the piano, and soon morphed into a much bigger experience as patrons slowly filtered into the room. Granted, I probably related to him because Tom is as addicted to performing as I, but it was also fun to see things just "flow" so effortlessly. I agree with Maurice. If you can come in tonight, I bet you'll be tickled to see this one!

Why am I not surprised? Tom is a consummate performer with more flight time than (dare I say) a lot of the people who work the Castle. I am so glad to hear that he was able to work with the piano player. Tom's acumen for combining music and magic and having a pianist who 'gets' it, must have been sublime. She really is talented.
My feelings about the piano player are well known...I respect her talent and energy. I just feel that the presence of piano player (in general) is superfluous. But under these circumstances, I am thrilled to hear that all went so smoothly. Wish I was closer to experience Tom's performance. Knock em dead Tommy boy!

In my "In Box" (I have fans!)
Me and my twin boys were at Universal Studios on Thursday and Friday of last week 6/17 & 6/18 2010. On Thursday on the way out. around 7 PM we caught a glimpse of your performance (less then a minute of it).
We could not stay long as we had to meet some friends for dinner and were in a rush.
All my boys could keep asking was if we could come see you the next day since we were coming back. Well we saw your performance on Friday evening around the same time. 7 PM'ish.
You were awesome. A true performer and my boys really enjoyed your magic. They have been performing magic tricks themselves for 2 years now since they were 8. They are 10 now and still very much interested in Magic.
It was cold that night and you made a comment about getting wet in the water fountains. Well you probably did not notice it, but I was soaked to the bone after playing with the kids in Universal Studios in the water park. Good thing for them they brought a change of clothes, but since I did not I was freezing later that night as you were performing and doing business. I wanted to stay longer and so did the boys but we couldn't. We were just freezing your yatchez off.
All three of us wanted to thank you so much and let you know how awesome your magic is.
Keep up the good work and I have subscribed to your blog so we can stay in tune with what you are up to.
Thank you again,
Luke, Justin & Trevor.
P.S. We are from Vegas, but when we are in SO Cal Again in a few months, we might try to make it out to the Citywalk again.
What time do you usually show up and leave? Are you there 7 days a week?

In my "In Box"
I just wanted to take a moment to let you know how much I'm enjoying your "5 Mystic Rings".
Really, really nice work!
Since I'm studying everything I can get my hands on, I've seen (or read of) a number of the moves before - but - one move just dropped my jaw ... the 'Pinky Hang' floored me! What a sweet move!
Is that your move? I've read through the Miller Routine book and didn't see it there (or anywhere else for that matter) ... OMG !
I love that move .. hehe.
What rings are you using (probably Owen's) and what size are they? Look like 13's or maybe even 15's?
Anyway, thank you again for putting out such a fine product.
Cheers,
Lee

Blueberry Cake
What am I supposed to do when I come home and I am confronted with this work of art. Damn her, she knows my weakness. . . anything she cooks. I'm a very lucky man to have a girl that loves to cook and bake. Sparky twitching involuntarily, kitty dreaming. Probably suffering PTSD from the beating he took this morning after eating a nights worth of knitting.Looks like some kind of blueberry cake. Was as tasty as it looks. I try and keep my shit in check, but I'm convinced, she likes me fat and happy. For the most part, we try and eat healthy. However sometimes cravings win out. I've had a taste for ribs for at least a few months and finally gave in and tried a rib joint near our place. Was happy I did.

It's strange to think of the relationship that we have with food. It's not always healthy. How many times have I found myself eating my feelings. It's not right. Sometimes, I just want to do some damage on myself. . . . like nachos and cheese dip. Yum. I try and stay away from empty calories and processed sugars. That doesn't always work out. I have a weakness for the sour Jelly Belly's and just about any cookie Polly bakes.
There was a time, a year ago, when I had much better self discipline, I wasn't making any exceptions with regard to calories. Wasn't drinking hardly any alcohol and was on a strict NO COOKIE diet. I was going to the gym more regularly and simply, was in better shape. I've let things slide enough. Gonna get back with the program. . . . as soon as the blueberry cake is gone. . . I swear it. . . . no really. . . Click Pics to enlarge and see their true deliciousness

The road to hell is paved with good intentions
Cookies. . . . I've always had a love hate relationship with the little fuckers. I have limit issues. . . like there are no limits. . . know what I'm saying? I've never been in love with someone who cooks or bakes, until Polly. I think, she bakes when she's stressed. She's stressed and I'm gaining weight. . . WHAT! During her shooting season (CSI:Miami) when she bakes cookies, I eat some that night and the rest go to work with her in the morning to share w/ the gang (Good Plan). During her hiatus, things getting out of hand. The other night I told her I couldn't stand the cookies mocking me from the other room, in their plastic container. Damn Cookies! I informed her that to help curb the the endless eating of empty (but tasty) calories, I was going to hide the cookie container in the oven (out of sight, out of mind, out of belly. . . right). So, I go to work and later in the evening she preheats the oven to cook dinner and ohhhhhh what a mess. I love my girl and she loves me. . . . and we've agreed that I can hide the cookies from myself anywhere that doesn't get hot.Roger Roger

Don't mind
Blow smoke. . . be kind
Recovering from a car wreck
jostled my brain
need to refrain
from feeling any pain
the cards fell
and I lost
at what cost
Blustery winds blow
and the palm trees sway
sun roof won't close
looks like rain

Sherwood 21st Century Cups
Advertised as the "Siradivarius" of Cups, these modern cups, designed and manufactured by American magician Brett Sherwood, were inspired by engraved cups once owned by the legendary 20th century magician Dai Vernon. Vernon's routine with the Cups and Balls set the modern standard and has strongly influenced nearly all contemporary handlings. These Sherwood cups were spun from sterling silver and then engraved with original designs. Finally, the cups were gold plated on the inside and given gold highlights on the outside. The accompanying balls have a solid core covered by a crocheted exterior.

Dean Dill's Baby! Wednesday afternoon (into the evening) jam session
I'm a lucky guy. I get to hang out with cream of the crop magicians whenever I want. In fact last night I went to a little going away party for Aaron Fisher. Also in attendance was Adam Grace and Billy Goodwin. Not bad company at all. Lucky and blessed am I.
Today at Dean's I had the pleasure of meeting for the first time Carl Williams. 87 year old illusion builder and designer (Has worked for ALL the greats for over half a century!). I've heard his name for years but never thought I'd meet him. We talked for over an hour about the process of restoring Robert Houdin's Light & Heavy Chest for my good friend Ken Klosterman. He also told me some of the work he had done on more than a few pieces in the Copperfield collection. Very cool.
Others in attendance were R Paul Wilson, Alphonso, Pete Biro, Vaclav, and a couple of other cats of obvious stature. I was fooled badly twice, once by R Paul Wilson with an card trick he named after his kids and one by Jim Krenz who did a signed card in box routine (which I wish he hadn't tipped). I love magic and I love magicians. These are my people. Over the last few years I've gotten to know Mr. Wilson a bit. The more time I spend with him the more I like him. Beyond that, the more I respect his knowledge and talent. Today we talked about the elusive block transfer control in the context of riffle shuffle systems. Paul is BAD ASS. It's hard enough to find someone who can even do it, let alone be able to apply it. Paul did it artfully, without making it look like the chore that it is. Bravo.
Dean did a couple of his signature effects, "Triangle" and "Revelation" both beautifully constructed pieces of magic
One of the things that I love about Dean is that he's always looking for new things to play with. He did this very cool color changing sponge ball thing that messed me up.
Vaclav wowed the gang with a trick where he moves his head in an impossible way. Was fun to hear him and Carl Williams talk about construction.
I was surprised when Alphonso asked me to do my Stripper Deck Pitch. Here I am in a room full of heavy hitters doing a self working deck. BY the end of the session I would also do the Cups and Balls and the Linking Rings.
Lots of magic fun, wherever I go, wherever I am.
It's fun being me.

Magic-Con Day 1 (Night Before)
I arrived in San Diego at 4:20PM. Shawn & Andy Greget arguing with their GPS and not quite having the easy navigation into the Hilton Bayfront Hotel as I did. We can do no wrong, I thought as I headed to the bar. There he was Tony Chang! He saw me and said loudly, “Tom mother fucking Frank!” I gave him a hug. Tony is the man. When he worked for me at Seattle Magic, he was a college kid at UDub, now he’s an underground legend in NYC. He flatters me to say that I had anything to do with his development.
I met a young man at the bar named Shane Cobalt (from Toronto). Obsessed with Steamboat Playing Cards and Erdnase, I immediately liked him. Within minutes we were discussing the SWE Shift (and I didn’t even bring it up); I knew I was at the right place.
The first night was low key. Night before cocktail party. Shawn and Andy finally arrived from Phoenix and we checked into our room. The party was a gas. Lots of familiar faces David Blaine, Steve Cohen, Juan Tamariz and a gaggle of teenage card jugglers, warmed my heart.
Shawn & I circulated while andy set up his book room.
Tricks, music, booze, cards and friends. Night one.
Juan Tamariz did an impromptu performance but I couldn’t see, so after 10 min. I retreated to refill my drink.
Time flew by, and around 3AM Shane, a fellow named Tony Cabral and I went out the front lobby to enjoy a cigar and continue our discussions on our fair art.
This was going to be quite a conference, I could tell.

St. Patty's Day
Spent time at the beach yesterday and today. Yesterday to catch up on my tan and walk on the beach, today to meet a magician at an Irish Pub (on St. Patty's Day) and to talk card tricks. I showed up at Kilkenny's at 2:30PM. Fer Basteri, was in the process of wowing some chicks with a card trick when I arrived. We geeked out pretty good for a couple of hours. Fun to meet a new friend.

Tim Flynn Table Top
My new street performing table top. A gift from my good friend Tim Flynn. Love it!
Magic-Con & Polly's B'day
The line up of talent is exceptional and they boast a "different" type of conference; more interactive, whatever that means. Check out this List of Presenters. I think I'm going to learn a lot. Haven't been to a magic convention in a few years. Always a hoot to see old friends from around the country. Shawn said our old friend Gary Plants will be there. Tony Chang in NYC these days, worked for me at Seattle Magic, he'll be there. Last Minute Special Guest, David Blaine, looking forward to meeting him for the first time. Should be a magical time.
Life is good. Celebrated Polly's birthday last week at Pizzeria Mozza. Here's a picture of the pizza she ordered. I got their meat lovers pizza with homemade Bacon, salami, fennel sausage, guanciale, tomato & mozzarella. It was nice to go to a romantic dimly lit restaurant, hold her hand and look lovingly into her beautiful blue eyes. I'm a lucky guy to have such a terrific woman love me. It's going on 4 years now and still not one argument. Wonderful on so many levels, Polly makes me happy. She puts up with me, no easy feat. Cigar smoking, card shuffling, coin dropping, shit that's 3 strikes right there for most women. For whatever weird reason, it just seems to work. What can I say, she rocks my world.Magic, friends, food and love. What more could I really want. I'm simple guy looking for a simple life in a complicated world. Finding the balance between life's pain and pleasure is the trick that life forces you to navigate.

Troy Hooser at the Magic Castle
I met Troy Hooser over 20 years ago back in Ohio (where we both are from). Those were the days, footloose and fancy free. One of the nice things about living in LA is that sooner or later, all of my pals come in to town to work the Castle. I've always been a fan of Troy's work. He's always had a soft touch with the coins an exceptional ability to put together commercial routines that are foolers; like his "Charming Chinese Challenge" and his variations of "3 Fly". He opened with coin routine for his Parlor Act, after that the rest was new to me. A sort of mental routine with socks and his trademark low key personality. I thought he did a great job. I've really been enjoying visiting the Castle these days. When I moved here almost 4 years ago, sometimes I felt like the odd man out. But now, I feel a bit more like a member of the community. Got to meet a Facebook friend, Friday night as well. A fellow named Tony Blake. We had a nice chat upstairs. Also spent some a little time talking to Maurice Newman. Another person who has always made feel welcome at the Castle is Vanessa Lauren. Nice spending a few minutes finding out what she's been up to. Later jammed a bit at the Owl Bar w/ Billy Goodwin and David Jockish. We ended up closing the joint, then heading over to Billy's apartment, walking distance from the Castle. We did card tricks well into the night and I didn't end up going to bed till 4:30AM.

Polly made these last night. Yummy

Brewer's Blondies
Yield: 24
2 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons malted milk powder
14 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened, cut into 1-inch cubes
1 3/4 cups firmly packed dark brown sugar
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
3/4 cup malted milk balls (like Whoppers or Maltesers), coarsely chopped in a food processor
3/4 cup (9 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips
3/4 cup toasted walnuts, chopped
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Butter the bottom and sides of a 9-by-13-inch baking pan.
In a medium bowl, whisk the flour, baking powder, salt and malted milk powder together.
In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the butter and brown sugar on medium speed until completely combined. Scrape down the bowl, add the eggs and vanilla, and beat until combined.
Add the flour mixture in two batches until just combined. Add the malted milk balls, chocolate chips and walnuts and beat until just combined, about 10 seconds. The mixture will be thick. Turn the mixture out into the prepared pan and use an offset spatula to spread it evenly.
Bake in the center of the oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the blondie comes out clean.
Transfer to a wire rack and let cool for 20 minutes. These blondies taste delicious warm. Cut them into squares and serve with ice cream. They also taste great at room temperature. Once thoroughly cooled, cover tightly with plastic wrap and keep at room temperature for up to 3 days.

Tayade Indian Cups
In all my years of using Tayade Balls (Haines House of Cards, where I grew up, was their leading US Distributor) I had never seen a set in green! Anyone else seen such a thing?
These 20th Century wooden cups, by the Indian maker D. A. Tayade, are based on an ancient, traditional design.
Unlike Western traditional conical cups, these do not stack and the knob on top is used to lift and manipulate the cups. Despite the technical differences, the structure of such routines is similar in that small cork balls appear, vanish and transpose between the cups, ultimately leading to the surprising revelation of something other than small balls (larger balls or fruit) under the cups.
The traditional Indian performers, known in Hindi as “Jadoo Wallah,” perform the cups seated on the ground, rather than sitting at or standing behind a table.

Chaplin Studios on La Brea in Hollywood
Driving in LA can be a blessing and a curse. The traffic can be so totally fucked on the freeways that you look for alternate routes to the places you want to go. I've been taking a bootleg route to work at the CityWalk, taking La Cienega to La Brea to get me from Redondo Beach into Hollywood. I was stopped at a red light at the corner of Sunset and La Brea and realized that I was at the historic location of the old Charlie Chaplin Studios. I thought quickly, took out my camera and snapped a couple of shots. How cool to think that some of my favorite Chaplin films were shot at this very location. Movies like, "The Kid", "The Gold Rush", "City Lights", "Modern Times", "The Great Dictator" & "Limelight", all shot here at this historic location.
After the Chaplin era, or maybe I should be saying the McCarthy era that forced him to leave this country, pretty much for good, the studio changed hands many times. After being sold by Chaplin in 1953, the property went through several changes in ownership and has served at various times as Kling Studios, the Red Skelton Studios, the shooting location for the "Adventures of Superman" and "Perry Mason" television series, and as the headquarters for A&M Records and is currently home of Jim Henson Productions. Lots of entertainment history hidden out in the open, on the streets of LA.

Our Deepest Fear By Marianne Williamson
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness
That most frightens us.
We ask ourselves
Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small
Does not serve the world.
There's nothing enlightened about shrinking
So that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine,
As children do.
We were born to make manifest
The glory of God that is within us.
It's not just in some of us;
It's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine,
We unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we're liberated from our own fear,
Our presence automatically liberates others.
Been playing around w/ this lately

For Christmas, CSI:Miami Production gave each of the cast and crew one of these nifty little camcorders as a holiday gift. I told Polly that I'd check it out for her and she hasn't seen it since. Pretty cool. Limited, no zoom, but easy to stick in your pocket and a decent HD picture. I shot this footage at Venice Beach earlier today. I met Matthew on Facebook and we arranged to meet at Venice Beach and do some street performing. Check it out, we had a good time.

Bo’s Cigar Lounge
Tuesday afternoon it rained. . . again. I was feeling shut in and needed a field trip. A quick Google search and I was delighted to find a cigar lounge near by. I got in my car and headed for Bo’s Cigar Lounge in Torrance. Two seconds in, I felt like I hit the jack pot. Large comfy leather chairs, foot stools, big ass, flat screens and a well stocked humidor. The kid behind the counter was helpful and energetic. I told him I liked the place and that it was nice to see a place where one could enjoy the luxury of a fine cigar in a civilized environment. There were a few guys hanging, smoking, working on laptops and watching TV.
I entered the walk in humidor like a kid in a candy store. I love the smell of tobacco and cedar in the morning. It smells like . . . victory. I treated myself to a Diamond Crown #4 Robusto Maduro. Took it to the counter where Tony rung me up. Next to the register was a bowl with a variety of cutters and lighters. I opted for the v cut and the butane torch lighter to get situated. Planted my ass in one of those big chairs and puffed away while I worked in my planner and shuffled cards. As guys came in, they went around and introduced themselves. Bonus points for the friendly atmosphere. After my smoke I gave Tony one of my postcards and told him to keep me in mind for any upcoming events. I split and was pleased to find Polly home early. The rain continued well into the night.

Another day
The day started with a late call time for Polly in the morning. Always nice to see my girl in waking hours. She split for work and I farted around for an hour or so before hitting the gym. Did my 15 min. warm up and 30 min. of weights, but decided instead of an hour of cardio, I opted for an hour of yoga instead. Just what the doctor ordered. First time at the new gym taking a free yoga class. Me & 30 cutie petutie asian chicks. . . . not bad. Learned a new one, “Lion’s Breath” while in downward dog, she (the instructor) had us tense every muscle in our faces (of which there are many) I made God awful faces trying to challenge those muscles, then open your mouth up wide, stick out your tongue and expel all negative energy. I liked that one. The woman who taught the class was great, she talked a lot about energy, light and oxygenating joints. Did you know how much tension you carry in your hip joints? After the yoga class I enjoyed the sauna, hot tub, shower and off for lunch w/ Polly at the studio.
I love visiting Polly on set. CSI:Miami rocks! Never a dull moment. Along with CSI:Miami on the Religh Studio’s Lot is Marvel’s latest “Thor” as well as 90210. I always arrive right as Polly breaks for lunch. Lunch was decent, choices were halibut, pork tenderloin, chicken and a pasta bar w/ scallops. Needless to say I overindulged in protein. We took a walk and sat on a fake stoop on their mini back lot. I love to play the game fake or real. Shit that you would swear is real like concrete, you knock on it and guess what. . . fake. . . I love it.
Here is a pic of some poor unfortunate bastard burned beyond recognition, cool huh? It’s so cool to see stuff shot. . . ad nausium. . like watching paint dry, then see it on tv all slick and edited. Cool! This show scores bonus points on creative use of swing sets that are multifunctional. After lunch I went to Costco to buy fruits, vegetables and other needed items like the big 1.75 Litre bottle of Crown Royal for $31.99 such a deal.

Back home and time to polish up one of the last sets of Phoenix Cups and Balls. Sold this same dude a set last week on ebay and he needed another. I like him.
Talked to my good friend Tim Flynn for an hour on the phone. Good chat about a lot of important stuff.
The complexities of like are mind boggling. Far be it for me as humble a student of life, to begin to think I understand even a portion of the big picture, but I’m trying.
Go figure, while I’m out here in my car, “The smoking lounge” typing on the computer, I get a skype message from my brother in Jerusalem. We video chat for a bit and say goodnight. I have a good feeling about things.

In my "In Box"
The eagle has landed, er, I mean the Phoenix! All I can say is WOW. This is the very best money I have spent in magic in years! I am just so pleased and surprised...................The cups, the wand, the balls, the presentation case................what a delight and will be a source of laughter and amazement for me and many for years to come. So thank you, thank you :-)
Just a few questions if it is OK? About how old are the cups (a collectors question)? And do you have any more for sale? Will you be making/getting any more? If you have more to sell, how many sets would you be willing to sell me and at what price? Not to worry, even if all the answers are no............ I thank you for this beautiful set of cups and balls. All the best, Roy
PS Although I am a performer, I do own 9 other sets, the original Charlie Miller and Bret Sherwood Silver/Gold included.

Roy,
I'm very happy that you like the cups. As for their age, I went to China in 1998 and had 1000 sets made ( so, I guess that would make them 12 years old). Out of the 1000 sets I'm down to the last 5 sets. I don't feel like I have enough to discount too much, so I will be selling them on Ebay w/ a starting bid of $150 and a buy it now price of $170.
Again, thanks for your business, I appreciate it greatly!
Magically,
Tom Frank
PS I'm listing another set this afternoon

Looking Forward
I’m exercising and eating right, for the most part. I’m proud of the physical transformation that I achieved last year. Looking and feeling good does wonders for the soul.
My heart breaks daily with regard to my kids, but I can only control my thoughts and actions, not theirs. Months pass without a word. This was the first Christmas that I did not send presents to them. I sent Hope a beautiful neckless for her birthday last June, haven’t heard from her since. Never even let me know if she got it. I sent Max some birthday presents in November, no word from him. Communication is a two way street. I’m tired of calling endlessly, leaving many voice mail messages for them and not hearing back. I wanted to see them while I was up in Seattle, request coldly denied.
When trying to figure out whether or not to be upset, I often ask myself; is my life any different today than it was a week, month or year ago? Sadly it isn’t, and I move forward with love in my heart and a smile on my face. I will always be here for my children, maybe someday I will be able to share the love I feel for them. . . with them.
So, I move forward into a new year, full of possibilities.
Polly and I are as solid a couple as I know. Between her, the cats, my friends and family; I feel loved and appreciated. That ain’t all bad. Life is good and going to get better if I have anything to say about it.
Looking forward

Hello Tom
My name is Yigal Mesika and recently I came across your video with you performing my exploding light bulb effect. I would just like to say you did a phenomenal job and I applaud your performance. I enjoy your presentation so much I would like to use the video and place it in some magic sites in order to promote the product. This will be great for you as it will give you mass exposure and connection to a new audience. Please let me know your thoughts, any questions and concerns are welcome.
Best regards,
Yigal Mesika

Sounds great, please let me know where you post it, I'd be interested in people's reactions. We met briefly at a convention (PCAM 4 or 5 years ago I think). I was happy to tell you how much I liked the effect. I used to have a magic shop and sold quite a few of them. Keep up the great work!
Sincerely,
Tom Frank

Thank you for your quick reply and for allowing me to use your video. I hope we meet again in the future, drinks will be on me. Just so you know we gave the video to Penguin Magic already and hope to give it to Hocus Pokus soon.

Fuck Me
I know frustration and pain and longing
I know that there are children in this world with my DNA
But I don't know them
I'm tired of trying to call them and not getting to talk to them
I'm tired of sending birthday and Christmas presents and not getting
as much as an acknowledgement
who knows if they got them? I don't.
Communication is a two way street
We live in an age of email, text messaging, skype, web cams and I can't get the time of day
from my own children.
What the fuck did I ever do to deserve this?
I was there when it mattered, now they don't even remember me.
This is the year that I truly let them go
Ball is in their court, if their mother doesn't take it away.

Ebay Question
Dylan Dec-17-09
A: Dylan, All the cups are made from the same die/chuck. I think, they are what they are. Some people love them, others don't. Best I can say is that I would offer a money back guarantee if your not satisfied. Or I might recommend the Johnson Cups for perfect cups in the same price range. Personally I love the cups, and use them all the time with no problem. Here is a bit of practice footage using the chrome plated Phoenix Cups.

Sincerely,
Tom Frank
15min. after I responded I got another email
Holy Cow! I had no idea I was talking to the actual Tom Frank! I have seen that routine before and I must say that there is a lot of elegance. I always enjoy your drop vanish. Looks great every time.
Perhaps it would be better if I told you what I was looking for. I just want a nice set that will hold a larger load. A tennis ball is really what I am shooting for. I understand that some of the sets can hold a tennis ball and still lie flat on the table. If you have a set that will do this then really I am fine.
I have always wondered what you do with your cups after you switch them for new undented ones. Have you considered selling your old sets. I for one would be interested if the price was right. Just for the sentimental value.
As always,
Dylan

Once a cunt always a cunt
We exchanged, via e-mail, back in October what needed to occur before any supervised visitation time could be put into motion. However, the specific guidelines in our Parenting Plan pertaining to the safety and well-being of our children, has not been followed or adhered to by you. Therefore, any vitiation with them cannot occur during the weekend of December 4th, while you are in Seattle for work.
Best regards,
Moira Bonomi

The loss of a friend
“All the years combine, they melt into a dream,
A broken angel sings from a guitar.
In the end, there's just a song, comes cryin' up the night
Thru all the broken dreams and vanished years.
Stella blue”
Received the sad news that a friend of mine had died. About the time that the surf hit my knees, I realized that I was not going to mourn his death, but rather celebrate his life. I felt the same way when my mom passed. People that are dealing with deteriorating health, pain and loss of quality of life; it’s almost a relief. I hope that doesn’t sound harsh.I prefer to think of Cellini as the guy I met when I was growing up. He was like out of a fairy tale and introduced me to the notion of personal adventure and showed me how a magician lived. It wasn’t just tricks and showmanship, technique and practice it was a crash course in life. I met him when I was 16 in New Orleans, then again when I was 18 in New York CIty; then I spent 9 months studying closely with him on a daily basis in 1984 when I was 19. That’s when our friendship became cemented. He was my mentor, teacher, friend and father figure. He had a work ethic and style all his own. “Be the first one out there in the morning, the last one to leave in the evening. . . . and never eat out.” That’s what he used to say. He was a work horse, grinding out show after show in the melting humidity of a New Orleans summer day.
I loved him, and liked to think that he loved me. He taught me so many things, like how to draw a crowd, a few people at first, then bring them in to unify them into an audience. He taught me about crowd mentality and how to use this to my advantage. So many years ago. . . a quarter century.
He will be missed and the stories he leaves behind legend. Those who knew him and called him a friend will cherish the time that he lavished on us.
His magic, his gift of time and education that he gave me. I can hardly imagine what my life would have been, had I not hooked up with him.
An orphan from New Hampshire, a door to door salesman, a Slydini student, lead singer in a rock band, street magician, teacher, world traveler, father, husband, friend. . . . he will be missed.
I feel lucky to have known such a man, to call him my friend and to call him on the phone when I wanted.
“When all the cards are down, there's nothing left to see,
There's just the pavement left and broken dreams.
In the end there's still that song comes cryin' like the wind.
Down every lonely street that's ever been
Stella blue”
